Charles S. Bissell III
Immediately following college in
1979, I went to live in the Burgundy
region of France for a year to learn
about wine tasting, grape growing,
and winemaking. During that time I
lived and worked with seven
different families, négociants, and
cooperatives from Dijon to Macon. I
worked hands-on, and participated in
every aspect of grape growing to
winemaking doing whatever work was
required. We made a special effort
every day to set some time aside to
purely taste and evaluate wine.
In the early 1980’s I sold wine on a
wholesale basis to wine shops and
restaurants in Westchester County,
New York. For five years in the
mid-1980’s I managed two retail fine
wine shops in the Greater Hartford
area learning the retail trade, and
continued my education in fine wine.
In 1988, I opened Charles Fine
Wine, and for the past 20 years,
have operated (and continue to
operate) the business in every
capacity. Over the past 30 years, I
have attended and led innumerable
wine tastings, wine dinners, wine
classes, etc. and continue to
taste wines from around the world on
a regular basis.
